CHP unit helps meet carbon targets for Cardiff hospital
The Client
The University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff is the biggest hospital in Wales, providing day to day health services to a population of around 500,000 and employing approximately 13,500 staff.
The Challenge
In 2007 the Department of Health set a mandatory target for the NHS to reduce its carbon emissions by 0.15 million tonnes by 2019. The supply and installation of a CHP unit was required as part of a major project to improve the energy efficiency of the University of Wales Hospital.
The CHP plant comprises two reciprocating gas engines driving a generator – each delivering a total of approximately 2 megawatts of electricity. The electrical output of the generators will be fed to a terminal point for connection to the main network.
Kimpton Acoustic Engineering was commissioned to supply and install the sound attenuation equipment for the CHP generator.
The Solution
The acoustic enclosure was manufactured and installed to the CHP plant to meet the specific requirements – noise levels could not reach 70 dBA at a 1 metre distance from all noise sources.
The CHP installation should meet a large part of the normal site base electrical demand and reduce the overall cost of imported electricity
Testimonial
“As hospitals require such a large amount of power, CHP installations are essential to meet targets for energy efficiency and carbon emissions – Kimpton Acoustic Engineering are experts in providing high quality noise enclosures that ensure the energy saving technology causes minimal disruption to patients and staff”. |
